Given its out-of-the-way location, it would be easy to dismiss the restaurant & cocktail bar at Battersea’s new eco-hotel, The Rafayel. It does, however, have a couple of aces up its sleeve. Occupying a plum spot on the river next to the London Heliport, its floor-to-ceiling glass frontage offers unfettered views throughout cooler months, & the spacious terrace will be a huge summer draw. The Eurasian menu is a mix of safe, business-traveller favourites & innovative Indian cooking, with mixed results: a nicely textured trio of fishcakes is too salty & an exotic twist on crème brûlée teeters towards sickly sweet, but terrific-value Mongolian warriors lamb (slow-cooked in a clay pot) boasts rich, complex flavours, & a well-judged grilled sea bass with ribbons of delicious squid ‘tagliatelle holds up the European side. Free filtered tap water, upbeat world music & sweet-natured staff add to a relaxed, youthful vibe. |
