Welcome To The ChampagneClub

Many, from Napoleon to Bette Davis, have championed Champagne - vivacious, social, and elegant! Sometimes when you want a drink, a glass of wine or a gin and tonic just doesnt do it! From the popping of the cork, to the tingling on the tongue of ice cold bubbles, a glass of Champagne definitely does IT!!

Bubbly really is all about the bubbles which hold the flavour and there are 49 million bubbles in a 750ml bottle of champagne, give or take a few, as calculated by scientist Bill Lembeck, based on 5.5 atmospheres of pressure, when stored at 20 degrees Celsius. Small wonder the cork leaves the bottle at approximately 38-40 mph.

For your enjoyment, ChampagneClub is adding more and more restaurants every day. From Modern British to Pan Asian and from informal to Michelin star, you and your dining guests can indulge in “A Glass of House Champagne on the House” when you order 2 courses.

If your favourite restaurants in London havent registered with the ChampagneClub yet, send me an email with your suggestions and we will invite them to register.

Join us next month for the next instalment of: the History of Champagne, more intriguing facts about Champagne, our new Champagne Gallery of Events and much, much more to amuse and entertain you.

"Champagne is the only wine that enhances a woman's beauty." Madame Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV. (1721 - 1764).

"I only drink Champagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty." Lily Bollinger

CHAMPAGNE FACTS...

The next time you pop the cork off a bottle of bubbly, consider, for a moment, these intriguing facts:

Dom Perignon, a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers, is considered to have invented champagne. He allowed the carbon dioxide to build up in the fermentation process, thus creating bubbles.

Legend has it that the champagne "coupe" (a shallow, broad-rimmed goblet) was modeled in the shape of Marie Antoinette's breast, using wax moulds.

The world's largest champagne glass, unveiled at a festival in Spoleto, Italy, stands nearly 7 feet tall, and can hold the equivalent of 22 regular bottles (558 ounces) of champagne. That's a lot of bubbly!

The longest champagne cork flight in the world was 177 feet, 9 inches, set by American Heinrich Medicus in New York in 1988.

Marilyn Monroe is said to have once taken a bath in the bubbly. According to her biographer, it took 350 bottles to fill the tub. Try this at home!

James Bond, Ian Fleming's fictional spy character, is portrayed as a frequent drinker of champagne. A count reveals thirty-five occasions in which the character was portrayed drinking champagne in the Bond films.

The official champagne of the Titanic was Heidsieck & Co Monopole Blue Top Champagne Brut. Rumor has it that a few bottles were brought up with the salvage recently, and still tasted great

CHAMPAGNE: THE EARLY HISTORY

The Romans were the first known inhabitants to plant vineyards in the Champagne region. The name Champagne comes from the Latin campania and referred to the similarities between the rolling hills of the province and the Italian countryside of Campania located south of Rome.

The area was divided into the Champagne pouilleuse - the chalky, barren plains east of Reims - and Champagne viticole, the forested hillside region known as the Montagne de Reims between Reims and the Marne river where the vines were planted. While vineyards were undoubtedly planted earlier, the first recorded vineyard belonged to St. Remi in the 5th century.

For most of the region's early history, the wines from Champagne were not known as "Champagne" or even vin de Champagne. Rather they were known as vins de Reims and vins de la rivre in reference to the Marne river which was a vital trade route via the Seine with Paris.

Champagne's location at the crossroads of two major trading routes, one east-west between Paris and the Rhineland and the other north-south between Flanders and Switzerland, would bring the region and its wines much prosperity and notoriety but would also play a pivotal role in Champagne being the site of countless battles and occupations.
