Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - London W1 7 June -15 August 2011
The Royal Academy, founded in 1768, key objective was to establish an annual exhibition, open to artists of merit, which could be visited by the public. The first Summer Exhibition took place in 1769.

Today, around 1,000 works are selected from 10,000 entries. Artists may submit up to 2 works (fee per piece) for selection by The Summer Exhibition Selection and Hanging Committee. Almost all exhibited works are for sale; the Academy receives 30% of the purchase price.

Exhibition themes have included "From Life" (2006), "Man Made" (2008), "Raw" (2010). In 2011, the committee agreed to have no specific theme.

Over 70,000 prize money, including the 25,000 Charles Wollaston Award, is awarded each year at the Summer Exhibition. Winners include Gerard Hemsworth (2000), Marc Quinn (2001), Jake and Dinos Chapman (2003), and Chantal Joffe (2006).

Royal Ascot - 14 -18 June 2011
Royal Ascot dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne. The first race, "Her Majesty's Plate", with a purse of 100 guineas, was held on 11 August. Seven horses competed, each carrying a weight of 12 stones. From creation until 1945, the only racing that took place at Ascot was the Royal Meeting, a four-day event.

Ascot racecourse closed for 20 months in 2004, for a 185 million redevelopment re-opening in June 2006. Over 300,000 people attend Royal Ascot, making it Europes best-attended race meeting. There are 16 Group races on offer, at least one Group One event each day and over 3 million of prize money.

The racecourse was the setting for a scene in My Fair Lady and the subject for the song "Ascot Gavotte". Embarrassingly the horses race the wrong way. The racecourse was used as a location in the James Bond film A View to a Kill (1985) where Bond was beginning his mission to defeat the villainous Max Zorin (Christopher Walken), whose horses were competing in a race.

Festival of Speed - Goodwood House Grounds, West Sussex 30 June 4 July 2011
The Goodwood Festival of Speed, founded by the Earl of March, known as the Festival of Speed, is an annual hill climb featuring historic motor racing vehicles that is held in the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, England.

With a small selection of entrants made up of invited historic vehicles, the first event that took place on Sunday 13 June 1993, took in a crowd of 25,000 despite a date clash with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Typically held in late June or early July, it is scheduled to fit into the motor racing calendar to avoid a date clash with the Formula One season. Visitors can expect to see cars and motorbikes from over 100 years of worldwide motor racing history climb the hill, including many of the latest F1 machines. Aside from the machines, the event attracts a host of names from the past and present of motor racing, offering a rare chance to see world-famous names driving a wide range of cars. Visitors are free to walk around the paddocks where the cars/ drivers are at close quarters.
